Chile faces critical cybersecurity threats to infrastructure

Chile is facing significant cybersecurity threats that target critical infrastructure, moving beyond simple data theft to the potential paralysis of essential services. Investigations into recent incidents were prompted by intelligence provided by the United States, leading authorities to examine whether unauthorized access or data extraction has occurred within national systems.

Recent history highlights the systemic risk posed by these attacks. A ransomware strike against a major telecommunications provider in October 2023 disrupted at least 12 public services. Similarly, in June 2025, the Public Health Institute experienced a ransomware attack that interrupted sanitary records, laboratory management, and documentation processes. More recently, the National Cybersecurity Agency (ANCI) warned of malicious activity targeting Electronic Health Record systems in public hospitals.

Experts emphasize that the risk extends to the entire supply chain, including network equipment, software, and metadata. Compromising telecommunications infrastructure allows attackers to observe banking, health, transport, and government communications without attacking each entity individually. The focus of defense is shifting from merely preventing entry to monitoring how long an attacker remains undetected and what metadata they can harvest to map relationships between officials and strategic sectors.
