Chile faces domestic pushback over Shield of the Americas membership
The government of José Antonio Kast is facing significant domestic political resistance following Chile's decision to join the Shield of the Americas, a regional alliance promoted by U.S. President Donald Trump. While 14 other nations have joined the initiative, Chile is the only member where the move has sparked intense debate.
Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna defended the move in Congress, stating that the agreement is a “political declaration” rather than a binding treaty. However, the U.S. State Department's documentation indicates the initiative encompasses three main pillars: security, economic cooperation, and multilateral coordination. The economic component includes exploring investment screening mechanisms and safeguarding supply chains for critical minerals.
On the security front, the alliance aims to combat transnational narco-terrorist organizations. The declaration specifically identifies threats posed by various criminal groups, including the Venezuelan-origin Tren de Aragua. The Chilean opposition, including former presidents Michelle Bachelet and Gabriel Boric, has raised questions regarding the full scope and implications of the agreement.
