Chile faces economic and social challenges, according to economist
Economist Óscar Landerretche, dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Chile, has issued a warning regarding the country's economic and social situation. In an analysis for his book, “Charchazo: el desarrollo en la era de la violencia”, Landerretche suggests that Chile is experiencing a growing gap between its historical image of stability and its current reality.
Landerretche identifies the deterioration of social coexistence, rising violence, and corruption as factors that have weakened citizen trust. He argues that to navigate current challenges and ensure future growth, the nation must rebuild social cohesion by reclaiming the importance of family, neighborhoods, and community organizations.
In a separate sociological critique, Waldo Aguilar Figueroa describes a highly stratified society characterized by significant debt and income inequality. He notes that a large portion of the population earns low monthly wages and highlights the tension between neoliberal economic doctrines and the lived reality of many citizens.
