Navarrete strike extended amid demands for government dialogue
Community organizations in Navarrete, Dominican Republic, have extended a strike for an additional 24 hours following a lack of dialogue with government representatives. The protest, which has seen more than 70% of local businesses close, aims to address several community grievances, including inadequate potable water supply, the need for the relocation of the municipal landfill, and improvements to the electrical service and local infrastructure like the Badén bridge.
The situation has led to significant tension and a heavy security presence from the National Police and the Army. During the demonstrations, dozens of electrical meters were destroyed, and a member of the Dominican Army was reportedly wounded by a gunshot. Authorities have deployed security forces to maintain order and ensure free movement, though the strike continues as protesters demand concrete responses to their long-standing needs.
