Chile faces sovereignty and resource dependency tensions with Argentina
Tensions regarding sovereignty and strategic dependency between Chile and Argentina have resurfaced, focusing on both territorial borders and essential resources. Former minister Francisco Vidal Salinas has expressed concern over recent Argentine statements regarding the continental shelf toward Antarctica, border issues, and military infrastructure, suggesting that Chile must maintain strategic capabilities while responding with prudence.
Beyond territorial disputes in the Magallanes region, Chile faces significant economic dependency on Argentina for food and energy. Data indicates that Chile imports 56 percent of the wheat it mills and 80 percent of its corn from Argentina. Additionally, Argentina provides nearly half of Chile's crude oil and all of its gas delivered via pipeline, with long-term contracts securing Argentine crude imports through 2033.
