Mexico records historic export highs and revised growth forecasts
Mexico's foreign trade reached historic levels in July 2026, with exports hitting a record 81,420 million dollars, a 43.7% increase compared to the previous year. This growth was primarily driven by non-automotive manufacturing, particularly electrical and electronic equipment, which saw a 134% surge. This expansion is linked to high demand from the United States for components related to artificial intelligence and data center infrastructure. However, imports also reached a record 82,267.6 million dollars, resulting in a trade deficit of 847.5 million dollars for the month.
In economic policy, the Banco de México (Banxico) has raised its 2026 GDP growth forecast from 1.1% to 1.5% following strong second-quarter performance. Conversely, the 2027 growth forecast was slightly adjusted downward from 2.1% to 2%.
Additionally, Banxico and the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV) have issued a revised proposal to reduce credit card interchange fees. The new draft suggests a cap of 1.30% for credit cards, a smaller reduction than the previously proposed 0.60% limit. The initiative aims to lower transaction costs and promote digital payments and financial inclusion across the country.
