Chile Government Negotiates Lower TAG Toll Rates Amid Rising Driver Debt
Chile’s Ministry of Transport and Public Works, led by Minister Louis de Grange, has opened individual talks with urban highway concessionaires to explore reductions in TAG toll fees. The move comes as arrears among motorists in the Metropolitan Region have doubled since 2020, with all urban routes reporting higher delinquency in recent months. The government is considering extending concession periods in exchange for lower user tariffs, though any agreement will depend on the specific terms of existing contracts. Concessionaire representatives and driver groups were briefed on the initiative, with the ministry aiming to reach deals within the year to ease the financial burden on families facing higher living costs.
