Chile grants scholarships to students in remote communes Ollagüe and Guaitecas

In the northern commune of Ollagüe, the 2026 Maintenance Scholarship Program allocated 85 million Chilean pesos to support more than 300 secondary and higher‑education students. Seventy‑one secondary‑school learners and 133 university students received scholarships covering 100%, 50% or 30% of their costs, based on social need, academic performance and residency. Mayor Jhean Ramírez Domínguez highlighted the program as a concrete opportunity for local families.

In the southern commune of Guaitecas, the private company AquaChile provided 16 Excellence Scholarships, each worth 1 million pesos, to students who must study outside the island of Melinka. The ceremony, attended by Mayor Bans Puinao and municipal council members, underscored the partnership between the municipality and AquaChile in easing transport, lodging and other expenses for higher‑education students.

Both initiatives aim to reduce educational barriers for young people from remote Chilean communities, enabling them to pursue secondary and university studies away from their home towns.
