Chile health officials urge winter precautions and vaccination
Chile's health experts stress that winter brings a rise in respiratory infections and a higher risk of falls, especially for older adults and people with chronic conditions. They explain that influenza and COVID‑19 vaccines do not guarantee one will not get sick, but they significantly lower the chances of severe disease, hospitalization and death.
Simple protective measures remain essential: frequent hand‑washing, regular ventilation of indoor spaces, wearing masks when symptomatic or in crowded settings, staying home when ill, and maintaining good hydration and nutrition. Dressing in layers, protecting the head, hands and feet, and using heating safely while ensuring proper ventilation are also recommended. Early medical consultation for fever, breathing difficulty or persistent symptoms can improve outcomes. The advice targets vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, pregnant women and individuals with asthma, COPD, diabetes, hypertension or cardiovascular disease.
