Chile health system faces chronic delays and equity gaps

Chile’s health system, praised for a life expectancy above 81 years, is hampered by growing waiting lists, access barriers, discontinuity of care, and persistent inequities. The surge in chronic disease, multimorbidity, mental‑health needs and climate‑related impacts have intensified pressure on hospitals and primary‑care services.

Although guarantees for the GES (Explicit Health Guarantees) are enshrined in law, many patients experience unresolved cases after being removed from waiting lists, with limited information on outcomes. Experts argue that merely increasing public health spending has not translated into sufficient capacity; reforms must focus on strengthening primary‑care networks, setting national standards for acceptable wait times, and investing in sustainable, equitable service delivery.
