The Chilean Undersecretariat for Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca), in collaboration with the Edigen initiative from the University of Chile, hosted an international webinar focused on the regulation of gene editing. The event brought together over 100 professionals from Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Argentina to discuss global advancements and regional challenges.
Experts shared diverse regulatory perspectives, including Pedro Rocha from the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) on global trends, and Facundo Simeone from Argentina's Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries regarding their national framework for genetic improvement. Additionally, researchers from Mexico's Cinvestav addressed the fundamentals of gene editing, while Chilean officials presented the current regulatory status for terrestrial plant gene editing.
