Chilean Defense Minister asserts sovereignty over Magellan Strait
Chilean Defense Minister Fernando Barros concluded a visit to the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica Region, where he asserted that the sovereignty of the Magellan Strait is not up for discussion. During meetings with the Chamber of Deputies and regional authorities, Barros emphasized that existing navigation treaties remain fully in effect without restrictions.
Regional development remains a central theme. Jaime Jelincic Aguilar, president of Gastropuq, highlighted the need to leverage geopolitical interest in the region to accelerate port infrastructure and maritime investment. Additionally, the regional presidential delegation presented the ‘Chile Despega’ plan, an initiative aimed at boosting employment through public works and unblocking private investment to counter recent economic contractions.
Separately, social experts have noted that Chile faces a significant housing crisis, with a deficit of approximately 400,000 new homes and challenges regarding housing affordability for those facing unemployment or high rental costs.
