Puerto Williams faces budget cuts and infrastructure challenges
Community leaders in Puerto Williams have issued an open letter to regional and provincial delegates, demanding accountability regarding significant proposed budget cuts. Local organizations, including neighborhood councils and the Yaghan indigenous community, warn that reductions in the Regional Transport Support Fund and the Extreme Zones Plan will jeopardize essential services such as drinking water, sewage, and connectivity.
Simultaneously, regional authorities are coordinating infrastructure improvements. A meeting between the provincial delegate and the regional governor focused on the initial stage of the Puerto Williams Sanitary Sanitation Master Plan, which involves an investment of approximately $2 billion pesos. This project aims to strengthen the local potable water system, though progress depends on finalizing land definitions for a new treatment plant and regulation tank.
In Punta Arenas, municipal leaders met with the regional governor to discuss the transfer of land for a sanitary landfill and the financing of several urban projects, including the Manuel Rada Park and various viewpoints, with investments totaling nearly $9 billion pesos.
