Chile implements green license plates for electric vehicles

Chile has implemented a new green license plate system for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Effective as of July 2026, the regulation was established through a decree modifying the Unique License Plate system.

The new plates feature black alphanumeric characters on a green background, distinguishing them from traditional white plates. This measure was developed following recommendations from the automotive industry and Bomberos de Chile to improve emergency response. According to Juan Carlos Field, president of Bomberos de Chile, the visual identifier helps emergency responders manage specific risks associated with these vehicles, such as high-voltage systems and battery overheating during fires.

The use of green plates is mandatory for all new electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Owners of existing electric vehicles may choose to switch to the new plates voluntarily by requesting a replacement through the Registro Civil.
