Chile implements high-security prison reforms and transfers
Chile is implementing significant changes to its penitentiary system through new infrastructure and increased security measures. President José Antonio Kast announced the commencement of 'Operation Cancerbero,' a massive transfer of at least 300 high-risk inmates to the new 'La Laguna' penitentiary complex in Talca. This modern facility features advanced technology, including over 1,500 surveillance cameras, cellular signal blockers, and body scanners, designed to dismantle organized crime factions.
In a separate security operation, authorities conducted a preventive nighttime raid at the Biobío Penitentiary Complex. Targeting high and maximum-security modules, the intervention by the Special Penitentiary Services Unit (USEP) resulted in the seizure of mobile phones and handmade sharp objects. Regional authorities stated these measures are intended to maintain strict internal control and neutralize security risks ahead of national holidays.
