Chile implements notary reforms including age limits and price caps

Chile is implementing a major reform to its notary and registrar system, introducing both age limits and price controls. Under new regulations, professionals in these roles must cease functions upon reaching 75 years of age. In the Coquimbo region, this has already resulted in the departure of two officials, Cecira Figari and Salvador Serey, as part of a planned transition to ensure service continuity.

Additionally, the Ministry of Justice has submitted a decree to the Comptroller General to establish maximum tariffs for notaries, registrars, and archivists. This measure aims to reduce high costs and price discrepancies between different municipalities. A new Technical Commission, comprising representatives from the Ministries of Justice, Economy, and Finance, along with Sernac, will propose these regulated rates. The Ministry of Justice will have the authority to classify offices into categories to apply differentiated tariffs based on efficiency and economic sustainability.
