Chile insurance market prepared for major earthquake risks

Chile's insurance industry maintains that the country possesses the necessary financial shielding to absorb a major earthquake. Local regulations require insurers to provision capital that exceeds international risk model projections. This capacity was demonstrated following the February 27 earthquake, where nearly 99% of housing insurance claims were paid within a year.

Recent seismic activity in neighboring countries has renewed discussions regarding earthquake preparedness. A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Chocó, Colombia, on August 10, and Venezuela experienced a severe double seismic event in June involving magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5. In Chile, the National Seismological Center of the University of Chile estimates a 65% probability of a magnitude 8 or greater earthquake in the northern region.

Industry specialists, including those from Gallagher Chile, note that while seismic risk remains a primary concern, the market is also increasingly focused on climate-related threats. The Chilean insurance market relies on a robust distribution of international reinsurance to manage these large-scale catastrophic risks.
