Chile issues health alerts for canine distemper in Coquimbo and respiratory disease vaccination in Santiago

Veterinarian Constanza Lira warned of a sharp increase in canine distemper cases in the Coquimbo region, describing a rise in severe illness and deaths among dogs since March. She emphasized common early symptoms such as nasal discharge, fever and loss of appetite, noting that the disease can quickly progress to neurological complications. Lira urged owners to keep dogs’ multivalent vaccinations up‑to‑date to curb the outbreak.

The regional health authority (Seremi de Salud) launched a vaccination operation in the Vega Central market in Santiago’s Metropolitan Region to address a surge in respiratory illnesses during winter. The campaign targets vulnerable groups, especially preschool children and older adults, aiming to increase coverage and prevent severe infections.
