Chile joins Escudo de las Américas as Mexico calls for UN reform
Chile has formally joined the Escudo de las Américas, a 15-country initiative promoted by Donald Trump. Announced by President Kast and Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna during the UN General Assembly, the agreement aims to strengthen the hemisphere through economic coordination, security, and multilateral cooperation. Key components include control over investments, critical mineral supply chains, digital infrastructure, and potential collective action under the Inter-American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance (TIAR).
Separately, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has criticized the United Nations for its perceived paralysis in addressing global conflicts, specifically citing the wars in Ukraine, Palestine, and Iran. Sheinbaum called for a profound reform of the multilateral system to make it more agile and effective, arguing that the organization must play a more active role in world pacification and respect human rights rather than being limited by the veto power held by the Security Council's permanent members.
