Chile joins the Shield of the Americas security initiative
Chile has officially joined the ‘Shield of the Americas’, a regional coordination initiative promoted by the United States to combat transnational organized crime and drug trafficking. Announced by President José Antonio Kast during his visit to the UN General Assembly in New York, the move transitions Chile from an observer status to a formal member of the 15-state coalition.
The Chilean government describes the initiative as a voluntary coordination framework rather than a formal treaty. Expected benefits include improved intelligence sharing, advanced data analysis systems, specialized training for security forces such as Carabineros and the PDI, and enhanced border coordination with neighboring countries including Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru.
The decision has faced significant domestic criticism. Opposition leaders have raised concerns regarding national sovereignty and potential subordination to U.S. interests. Former presidents Gabriel Boric and Michelle Bachelet issued a joint statement urging the government to reconsider, emphasizing that international cooperation must fully respect national autonomy. The Chilean Chamber of Deputies is expected to call the Foreign Minister to account regarding the decision.
