Chile government skips official 1973 coup anniversary ceremonies
For the first time since the return to democracy, the Chilean government under President José Antonio Kast will not hold an official institutional ceremony at La Moneda Palace to commemorate the 53rd anniversary of the 1973 military coup.
President Kast is scheduled to be in the Los Ríos Region to carry out his regular regional agenda rather than participating in national commemorations in Santiago. The administration defended this decision, stating a desire to focus on current national priorities and move forward without being drawn into political extremes of the past.
While the central government abstains from official acts, security forces will be deployed in Santiago to monitor potential unrest and mobilizations in critical areas such as Estación Central, Puente Alto, and San Bernardo. Meanwhile, various social and political organizations are planning their own ceremonies to honor the victims of the military dictatorship, including visits to the General Cemetery and the Museum of Memory and Human Rights.
