Chile mandates USB‑C charging ports on all phones sold from October

Chile has issued a decree, published in the Diario Oficial, to enforce a universal‑charger law. Starting in October of this year, every regulated mobile phone sold in the country must be equipped with a USB‑C charging port. The regulation initially covers 11 categories of electronic devices, beginning with smartphones, and will be extended to tablets, digital cameras, headphones and other gadgets by October 2028.

The move aligns Chile with a growing global trend toward a single, interoperable charging standard, aiming to reduce electronic waste and simplify consumer choice.

The decree is part of the country's broader consumer‑protection and sustainability agenda and will affect manufacturers, importers and retailers of mobile devices in Chile.
