Chile mayor warns health centre closures over national reconstruction fiscal cuts

Mayor Tomás Vodanovic of Maipú said a 6 billion‑peso reduction in municipal funding under the government’s National Reconstruction reform would force the municipality to close its health centres at 3 p.m., ending extended evening and weekend services. He warned that the reform “threatens the main financing mechanism for municipalities” and could lead to “total dis‑financing” of basic services.

At the same time, opposition deputies in the Chilean Congress have repeatedly blocked ministers from presenting reports on the reconstruction plan, denying quorum and refusing the use of PowerPoint slides. The opposition has been described as engaging in “unacceptable institutional obstructionism,” seeking to impede the government's agenda. Despite these tactics, the Chamber’s Finance Committee approved 29 of 34 articles of the reconstruction bill, aiming for a full vote in the plenary within days.

The clash highlights the government's push for aggressive fiscal reforms and the left‑wing parties’ resistance, with potential repercussions for municipal services and the broader implementation of the reconstruction program.
