Chile pushes major Carabineros reform to boost recruitment, pay and equipment
The Chilean government has introduced a bill to strengthen the Carabineros police force. The proposal seeks to increase recruitment, raise salaries and incentives, modernise equipment with body‑cameras, bullet‑proof vests and mobile devices, and hire civilian staff to replace administrative roles so that more than 1,000 officers can return to patrol duties. It also aims to improve training conditions by raising stipends for trainees, financing internships and medical exams, and allowing early promotion for those who pass the third semester.
Deputy Ricardo Neumann (UDI) presented an "Agenda Mártires de Chile" containing 16 economic, labour and psychosocial measures to support families of police officers killed in the line of duty, following the recent death of Cabo Primero Marcos Cosme. Neumann urged the government to include such benefits in the reform package.
Seremi of Public Security Hernán Silva praised the initiative as fulfilling a longstanding commitment to the institution, highlighting the new incentive structure for officers serving in high‑risk zones and the permanent investment plan for equipment and facilities.
