Chile municipalities confront contract terminations and audit orders

The Municipality of Ancud in Chile ended its contract with Tresol Limitada for the pre‑treatment and final disposal of household waste after health authority observations led to a summons against the company's plant. The termination, announced last week, follows a municipal decision to prioritize lower‑cost proposals and may be followed by a new agreement with Remap SpA if the contract is formally concluded.

In a separate case, the Contraloría Regional del Maule instructed the Municipality of Parral to start a procedure to invalidate a multi‑hundred‑million‑peso renewal of an IT services contract with Cas Chile S.A. The renewal was signed after the original contract had expired and without the required approval of the municipal council, violating national procurement rules. The municipality must report the outcome by mid‑August.

Both incidents illustrate heightened scrutiny of municipal procurement and contract compliance in Chile, affecting local service delivery and exposing potential administrative irregularities.
