Chile municipalities push government on primary health budget cuts

Chile’s Association of Municipalities (ACHM) met with Health Minister May Chomali to discuss proposed budget adjustments to the country’s primary health care (APS) system. Municipal leaders warned that any cuts could jeopardise services for millions and called for safeguards in the 2027 budget. The minister affirmed the dialogue, pledged that no social programs would be eliminated, and announced two technical tables to review the universal APS model and the upcoming budget.

In a separate statement, the ACHM criticised the government’s broader “Megarreforma” led by Finance Minister Jorge Quiroz, saying the reform could damage municipal finances and autonomy. The association highlighted risks such as the removal of contributions for people over 65, changes to urban planning law, and cuts to health and education spending, urging a halt to the proposal until municipal concerns are formally addressed.
