Ricardo Gareca analyzes Chilean football challenges and coaching trends

Former Chile national team coach Ricardo Gareca has reflected on his tenure and the current state of Chilean football. Discussing his departure in June 2025 following poor World Cup qualifying results, Gareca attributed the failure to exhaustion, a lack of tolerance within the national process, and numerous player injuries. He noted that he struggled to find a solution to these issues and emphasized that he did not initiate the full process, unlike in other nations.

Gareca also identified structural problems in the sport, specifically the lack of long-term projects for developing young talent to replace the ‘Golden Generation’. He commented on the influence of sports corporations and the need for modern coaching approaches that adapt to the digital age and social media usage of younger players. Additionally, he addressed Marcelo Bielsa’s departure from Uruguay, suggesting that older coaches must adapt to the current era rather than expecting players to conform to outdated standards.

In domestic women’s football, Universidad de Chile has confirmed its schedule for the Liga Femenina play-offs. The team, coached by Nicolás Bravo, will face Huachipato in the first leg of the quarter-finals on September 27 in Talcahuano.
