Chile protests mark 53rd anniversary of Pinochet coup

Chile marked the 53rd anniversary of the 1973 military coup with widespread protests and commemorations. For the first time since the return to democracy in 1990, the government of President José Antonio Kast did not hold any official commemorative acts, a decision the president defended by stating the nation must look toward the future.

Security Minister Martín Arrau reported that 284 people were detained during the demonstrations, an 80% increase compared to the previous year. The detainees included 31 minors and 16 foreigners. While violent incidents reportedly decreased by 34% compared to the previous year, clashes occurred in Santiago, where police used tear gas and water cannons to respond to protesters throwing stones and sticks.

Thousands of citizens gathered at various sites to honor the victims of the Pinochet dictatorship, which left more than 3,200 dead and disappeared. Major gatherings took place at the General Cemetery in Santiago, the National Stadium, and La Moneda Palace. In regions like Talca, women marched in black to demand human rights protections and memory of the repression.
