Chile observes Day of Solidarity honoring San Alberto Hurtado

Chile observes the Day of Solidarity on August 18, a date established by the state to honor the legacy of San Alberto Hurtado (1901-1952). A Jesuit priest and lawyer, Hurtado was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2005 and is recognized as a significant spiritual figure in Chile for his advocacy of social justice.

Hurtado’s work was defined by three main pillars: his devotion to the Eucharist expressed through service to the poor, his founding of the Hogar de Cristo in 1944 to provide shelter for the destitute, and his commitment to labor rights and social doctrine through the creation of the Chilean Union Action (ASICH) and the magazine ‘Mensaje’.
