Chile places extradited sexual abuse suspect Luis Alejandro Gómez in preventive detention
Chile's Chillán prosecutor's office secured preventive detention for Luis Alejandro Gómez Irribarra, who was extradited from Málaga, Spain, on June 23. Gómez faces charges of repeated rape and production of child pornography involving a young woman from Chillán, whose abuse began at age eight and continued for a decade. Prosecutor Valentina Hormazábal formalized the investigation, noting Gómez's prior detention order dated May 13, 2025, and his departure from Chile on January 30, 2024. The case is part of a broader network of sexual offenders, with several others already convicted, including Marco Antonio Orellana Basáez, who is serving a life sentence plus additional years.
The investigation, conducted by the Fiscalía Regional and the PDI's Sexual Crimes Investigative Brigade (Brisex), highlighted the victim's severe emotional, cognitive, and social damage. Psychological support was provided by the Victim and Witness Assistance Unit.
