Chile President José Antonio Kast pledges pardons for police convicted in 2019 protests

President José Antonio Kast met with Republican legislators in Cerro Castillo to discuss internal tensions within the governing coalition. During the four‑hour session he reiterated his commitment to grant pardons to carabineros sentenced for roles in the 2019 unrest, a demand of the Republican Party since it entered government. Kast also urged Republican members to avoid confrontations with Chile Vamos and to improve coordination within the right‑wing alliance.

The meeting came amid criticism of other coalition parties and precedes an expanded party council aimed at strengthening political cohesion.
