Chile President José Antonio Kast's Villarrica clash leads to woman's detention and political backlash

During a ceremony in Villarrica, Chilean President José Antonio Kast was confronted by a woman who accused him of disrespect. police arrested the woman, citing two existing arrest warrants. She is accused of online fraud for selling a mobile phone and was placed in preventive detention while hearings are scheduled in Punta Arenas and Iquique.

The incident ignited sharp criticism from Chile's left-wing parties—including the Communist Party, Frente Amplio and the Socialist Party—who described Kast’s behaviour as pre‑potent and undemocratic. Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro also weighed in, tweeting: “Esta forma de gobernar, es de una línea que se quiere que domine toda la América Latina…”, condemning the perceived arrogance.
