Chile President José Kast intensifies punitive neoliberal reforms

In 2026 Chile's right‑wing government under President José Kast has accelerated a punitive neoliberal agenda. The administration combines severe fiscal tightening, deregulation of productive sectors and aggressive promotion of extractive industries such as lithium, copper and agro‑industrial mining. At the same time, state apparatuses have been expanded to enforce security, order and austerity, a model described by analysts as a “punitive subsidiary state”.
