Chile President Kast announces extended migrant detention and border security upgrades in Arica

President José Antonio Kast toured the Arica y Parinacota region, attending ceremonies commemorating the 146th anniversary of the “Asalto y Toma del Morro de Arica” and a regional cabinet meeting. He inspected progress on the “Plan Escudo Fronterizo,” a border‑security initiative that combines physical barriers, technology and increased police and army presence.

During a press briefing at the northern frontier, Kast announced two migration‑policy measures: a constitutional reform to lengthen the detention period for migrants with expulsion orders from five to up to 60 days, extendable to 180 days under judicial control; and an amendment to the penal code that makes the illegal transfer of undocumented migrants an aggravating circumstance. Government officials said the steps demonstrate the administration’s commitment to the region and aim to strengthen security while promoting local tourism.

The visit also featured a public dialogue, the seventh “Presidente Presente” event, where the president met with local residents, community leaders and social organizations at the Arica Municipal Theatre.
