Chile Public Rejects US Tariffs, Calls for Stronger Trade Ties with China

A recent Plaza Pública survey shows that 87% of Chileans oppose the United States' decision to raise tariffs on a key portion of Chilean exports, and 57% criticize the Chilean government's handling of relations with Washington. More than half (52%) say Chile should prioritize trade with China, while 38% favor the European Union and 37% cite Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Over half (54%) argue the country should deepen ties with both China and the United States equally. The poll also records a drop in former President Donald Trump's positive rating to 22%, his lowest since 2023, and a presidential approval rating for José Antonio Kast of 36% with 60% disapproval. The findings highlight growing public pressure for Chile to diversify its trade strategy away from the United States.
