Chile pushes safe digital environment with student input and municipal tech security summit

Youth from six communes in the Araucanía region, aged 14 to 17, took part in a dialogue with regional officials to share their experiences on social media use. The session, led by the regional secretaries of Development Social and Family and Education, will inform the design of Chile’s National Plan for Safe Digital Environments, a proposal the Ministry of Development Social and Family intends to turn into legislation. Students highlighted the need for age‑verification, safer content filters and education on responsible platform use, with one noting, “It is very important to generate these conversation spaces with the students, because the information about what really happens on social networks can only be obtained from the people who use them.”

In Santiago, the Fundación País Digital, backed by Corfo Metropolitano, convened municipal leaders, academics and technology firms for an Innovation in Metropolitan Security meeting. The event marked the conclusion of the Teleprotección Inteligente project, which produced a guide for intelligent tele‑protection systems that leverages advanced analytics and artificial intelligence. Participants stressed the need for interoperable, evidence‑based security solutions, with the foundation’s manager stating, “Technology and AI are transforming how cities and institutions face security challenges,” and a regional administrator adding that the collaboration addresses fragmentation and security across the metropolitan area.
