Chile pushes security crackdown with controversial vandal registry and police raids

Expert Iban de Rementería of the Corporación Ciudadanía y Justicia criticized the government’s proposed national "vandal registry," calling it a systematic way to discriminate against young people and demonstrators. He warned that the measure would divert police and municipal guard resources from genuine crimes and affect popular sectors the most. Rementería also doubted the effectiveness of President Kast’s announced police deployments in high‑crime neighborhoods, describing them as "ephemeral and superficial," and said the new "Ley Escuela Segura" would not resolve school violence.

In Valparaíso, Carabineros carried out a large‑scale "Ronda Impacto" operation in the Cerro Placeres and Rodelillo districts. The raid, led by the 3ª Comisaría Norte, deployed territorial officers, motorcyclists and specialized units, conducting identity checks and preventive patrols. Seven individuals were detained, including two fugitives wanted for serious offenses, along with nine infractions and 160 preventive controls, the police said the action aimed to boost community security.
