Chile reflects on the social unrest and collective identity of 2019

Seven years after the 2019 social unrest in Chile, reflections emerge regarding the collective identity and social demands that characterized the period. The movement transformed individual grievances—such as insufficient pensions, healthcare access, education, and housing—into a shared social experience, fostering a sense of collective struggle against structural inequality.

While the unrest included instances of violence and destruction, it also represented a broad civic demand for recognition. Despite attempts to find institutional solutions through the constitutional process, both proposed drafts were rejected. Current observations suggest a shift toward political conflict and increased social fragmentation, with a growing focus on security concerns that may have displaced the original social demands.
