Chile Rejoins Non-Aligned Movement at Kampala Summit
In January 2024, a high‑level meeting of the Non‑Aligned Movement (NAM) was held in Kampala, Uganda. Delegates discussed a range of issues, including a strong condemnation of the Gaza conflict and Israel’s military actions, reaffirmation of the principle of self‑determination, opposition to unilateral economic sanctions, and support for Palestine, Cuba and Venezuela. The summit also called for greater South‑South cooperation and urged reform of the United Nations Security Council to increase representation of developing countries.
Chile, which had participated in the NAM under a previous administration, was noted for having restored diplomatic relations with Israel under the current government. The article argues that the movement no longer reflects contemporary international realities and faces a choice between reform or abandonment.
