Chile renews agricultural insurance for fruit fly outbreaks
Chilean agricultural authorities have announced the renewal of a catastrophic collective insurance policy designed to protect farmers against fruit fly outbreaks. The policy, managed by Agroseguros, covers producers with up to 50 hectares of fruit and vegetable crops and carries no direct cost for the farmers.
During the 2025-2026 season, the insurance program paid out more than 600 million pesos to 398 affected farmers across the country. The Coquimbo region has been the most heavily impacted, accounting for 70% of the cases and receiving 532 million pesos in indemnities.
Undersecretary of Agriculture Francesco Venezian noted that the pest poses a significant threat to the national economy. The state provides subsidies for such insurance ranging from 45% to 65% to encourage participation and mitigate agricultural losses.
