Chile reports 1,874 deportations and rising voluntary departures in 2026
The Chilean government, under President José Antonio Kast, has reported significant shifts in migration and public sentiment. As of October 2026, authorities have executed 1,874 deportations this year, including a recent charter flight that transported 56 individuals to Bolivia, Ecuador, and Colombia. Interior Undersecretary Máximo Pavez noted that the frequency of these flights is approximately three times higher than the previous administration's average.
In addition to formal deportations, 10,345 foreigners who entered through unauthorized crossings have departed Chile voluntarily between January and October. This figure includes 8,243 Venezuelan citizens. The government reported that causes for deportation include irregular entry and criminal activities such as robbery and drug trafficking. While border reports of irregular entries have decreased by 93.3% compared to the previous year, migration inspections have increased by 24.7%.
Simultaneously, public approval for the Kast administration has declined. Recent surveys indicate that 64% of Chileans disapprove of his management, a drop from his initial approval ratings upon taking office in March. This dissatisfaction coincides with economic challenges, including a 9.6% unemployment rate and low growth projections, as well as climate emergencies affecting multiple regions.
