Chile health authorities warn of rising respiratory viruses and listeriosis
Chilean health authorities have issued warnings regarding rising respiratory virus circulation and foodborne illness risks. The Ministry of Health (Minsal) reported that 70% of individuals who died from influenza were unvaccinated. Additionally, 53% of those hospitalized with severe influenza cases had not received their vaccine doses. During epidemiological week 32, respiratory test positivity reached 54.3%, with Rhinovirus (32.4%) and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (27.4%) identified as the predominant pathogens.
In the Maule Region, respiratory virus circulation hit a 2026 peak with a 61% positivity rate. Hospitalization rates are also rising, particularly among children and the elderly. Meanwhile, in the Coquimbo Region, health officials are reinforcing prevention measures against listeriosis. Authorities noted that between 3 and 10 cases occur annually in the region, with 61% of cases concentrated in people over 60. Risks include the consumption of artisanal cheeses and processed meats.
