Chile reports multiple tremors amid discussions on new seismic building standards

Chile experienced several seismic events on September 5, 2026, including tremors with magnitudes ranging from 3.0 to 4.3. Recorded locations included areas near San Antonio de los Cobres, Socaire, Ollagüe, Pica, San Pedro de Atacama, and Los Andes. The National Seismological Center of the University of Chile monitors these movements, which occur due to the interaction between the Nazca and South American tectonic plates.

In response to the country's high seismic risk, experts from the University of Chile recently convened to discuss the updated NCh433 seismic standard. This regulatory framework governs earthquake-resistant construction. Specialists emphasized that the updated standards incorporate technical modifications and lessons learned from recent earthquakes to improve structural performance, particularly for high-rise buildings and varying soil conditions, aiming to increase national resilience.
