Chile sees drop in Ñuñoa crime fears as nationwide economic anxiety spikes

The 2025 Urban Citizen Security Survey (ENUSC) found that the commune of Ñuñoa recorded the largest decline in Chile for perceived crime growth, with a 13‑point drop and a 3‑point reduction in violent‑crime victimization, well below regional and national averages. Mayor Sebastián Sichel attributed the improvement to a more active municipal security strategy, increased patrol vehicles, on‑ground inspectors and closer coordination with Carabineros.

A separate “Sueños y temores de los chilenos” survey showed that fear of labor and economic instability surged 20 points to 55%, the highest level since the poll began in 2020, while concerns about crime and drug trafficking fell to 21% and 48% respectively. Respondents named stable employment and income as their top aspiration, with housing second. The survey highlighted regional variations, with the south more worried about jobs and the metropolitan area still focused on crime. Analysts noted the shift reflects growing economic uncertainty despite decreasing crime concerns.
