Chile selects ‘The Meltdown’ for 2027 Academy Awards
The Chilean Film Academy has selected Manuela Martelli’s mystery drama ‘The Meltdown’ (El deshielo) to represent Chile in the Best International Feature category at the 2027 Academy Awards. Set in an Andes ski resort during the post-Pinochet era, the film follows a nine-year-old girl who witnesses unsettling events. The production is an international co-production involving Chile, the United States, Mexico, and Spain.
Martelli’s film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section, marks her second feature following ‘Chile, 1976’. In the United States, Kino Lorber plans a theatrical release in early 2027.
The selection comes amid discussions regarding funding for the national film industry. Gabriel Díaz, president of the Chilean Academy, noted that for the first time, half of the submitted films were directed by women. However, he also highlighted significant budget challenges, including a 64% reduction in the Audiovisual Investment Support Fund and a 9% cut to the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage budget under the administration of President Jose Antonio Kast.
