Chile Senate debates childcare funding and Socialist Party clash
Senator Yasna Provoste of Atacama voted against the government’s proposal to finance a new daycare (sala cuna) by tapping the unemployment insurance system. She warned that the mechanism could reduce the Solidarity Unemployment Fund by about 23% by 2035 and undermine protection for workers, especially as unemployment has risen to 9.4%.
In a separate episode, Socialist Party senators Paulina Vodanovic and Daniella Cicardini engaged in a heated confrontation in the Senate chamber after Cicardini accused Vodanovic of colluding with Finance Minister Jorge Quiroz over a tax‑reform clause. The dispute was diffused when fellow senator Danisa Astudillo intervened and called for calmer discussion.
