Chile Senator Cariola Pushes Port‑City Equity Agenda with Municipal Mayors
Senator Karol Cariola met with leaders of the Association of Municipalities of Concessioned Port Cities, including Quintero Mayor Rolando Silva and Caldera Mayor Brunilda González, to discuss a cross‑party parliamentary bench aimed at updating port policies and ensuring fair contributions from ports to their host cities. The senators and mayors emphasized the need for a new port tax and territorial equity measures so that coastal municipalities receive adequate benefits from port activities, especially as major terminals in Valparaíso and San Antonio expand.
Cariola said ports must “look to the city as well as the sea,” and the municipal leaders echoed the call for a “historical social demand” for equitable treatment of port communities across Chile.
