Chilean courts issue major sentences for organized crime and Navy assault case

Chilean authorities have secured several major legal victories against organized crime and in high-profile criminal investigations.

A Santiago court sentenced 16 members of the Colombian criminal group ‘Los Emisarios del Cauca’ to a combined 143 years in prison. The group operated a ‘criminal market’ using a commercial storefront in Santiago to coordinate the import of 500 to 800 kilograms of cocaine, cannabis, and synthetic drugs from Europe, Bolivia, and Colombia between 2019 and 2022.

In Iquique, the Court of Appeals upheld sentences for six members of the ‘Los Piratas’ cell, part of the transnational Tren de Aragua organization, totaling over 93 years in prison for crimes including kidnapping and robbery. Additionally, the Tarapacá Regional Prosecutor's Office received an award for its long-term investigation that dismantled the leadership of the Tren de Aragua in Chile.

In Rapa Nui, the Valparaíso Court of Appeals confirmed the preventive detention of four Chilean Navy officials accused of a group sexual assault occurring in early October. While the court maintained the detention due to the perceived danger to the victim and society, complainants have requested that the accused serve their sentences in common prisons rather than naval facilities.
