Chile summons U.S. Ambassador over 2019 unrest intelligence claims

Chile's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the United States Ambassador to Chile, Brandon Judd, to request intelligence information regarding the 2019 social unrest, known as the 'estallido social'.

The summons follows statements made by Ambassador Judd in an interview with CNN Chile, where he claimed that U.S. intelligence agencies concluded that the violence and disturbances during the 2019 protests were perpetrated by 'left-wing activists' or 'organizations of left-wing ideology'.

Judd noted that while the U.S. has conducted specific analyses of the events, this evidence has not yet been handed over to the Chilean justice system. However, he indicated that the United States is willing to share this information upon request, citing existing intelligence cooperation between the two nations. The Chilean government stated that any information contributing to clarifying the events of October 18, 2019, and the subsequent days is of 'maximum importance' to identify those responsible for acts of violence.
