Chile tackles regional university development and worker wellbeing amid severe storms

Juan Manuel Fierro, rector of the Universidad de la Frontera (UFRO) and vice‑president of the AUR, emphasized that regional public universities are strategic infrastructure for development, not merely service providers. He argued that such institutions must be built for their territories, generating locally relevant knowledge, innovation and leadership to address the unique challenges of regions like Araucanía.

Separately, psychologist Cyntia Segovia highlighted the psychosocial strain on Chilean workers caused by recent severe storms that left over 10 people dead, thousands displaced and more than 104,000 isolated across the Atacama and Coquimbo regions. She noted that employees continue to grapple with family concerns, electricity outages and caregiving responsibilities while at work, underscoring the need for organizational support and flexible policies to protect mental health during emergencies.
